Tattoo Removal Q & A

Who can benefit from laser tattoo removal?

A tattoo might be a good idea at the time but things change and you might no longer want it on your skin. Methods of tattoo removal have changed over time and now techniques can be tailored to suit each individual case. Patients with previously treated tattoos, that have not been effectively removed by other treatments, may also be candidates for laser therapy for tattoo removal providing the prior treatments did not result in excessive scarring.

What can I expect during laser tattoo removal?

Pandit Foot & Ankle Clinic proudly offers patients the Cynosure Med-Lite C6 LASER for tattoo removal. The laser is recognized for its ability to remove tattoos painlessly. Depending on the size and color of your tattoo, the treatment with the laser will vary. The age, size, and type of tattoo along with the color of the patient's skin and depth to which the tattoo pigment extends will also affect the removal technique. The treatment itself consists of pulses of laser light across the tattooed portion of the skin. Smaller tattoos require fewer pulses, while larger ones require more. At each treatment, the tattoo should become progressively lighter.

What is aftercare of tattoo removal like?

Immediately following treatment, an ice pack may be applied to soothe the treated area. A bandage or patch will be used to protect the site. It is not unusual for scabbing or blistering of the treated area to occur for the first few days after laser exposure. It is recommended that the patient use a topical antibiotic cream, and it should be covered with a sunblock when out in the sun. It is important not to touch or peel any scabbing or to pop any blisters. After treatment, the discomfort has been compared to that of a mild sunburn and subsides usually within 12-24 hours. Multiple treatments are required to achieve maximum fading of tattoos.
